THE CACHE IS NOT HIDDEN IN A STONE WALL !!
The inscription on the stone explains its position and purpose as follows:
“A record of two ways from hence over the Armboth Fells July 1833-43 which inspired Matthew Arnold’s poem Resignation” and includes an excerpt as follows:
We left, just ten years since, you say,
That wayside inn we left to-day:
And now, in front, behold outspread
Those upper regions we must tread;
Mild hollows, and clear heathy swells.
The cheerful silence of the fells.
And in memory of the same poet 1822–88.
