Thème historique:
Abélard,un poète philosophe de famille noble était tombé amoureux de la nièce de 15 ans du chanoine Fulbert (prêtre à Notre Dame (Paris)). Héloïse était une noble parisienne de la haute aristocratie.Fulbert avait confié à Abélard l'éducation de sa nièce, mais n'était pas d'accord avec ses amours. Après avoir appris qu'ils étaient amoureux, il chassa Abélard de sa maison. Ceux cis se marièrent en secret, Héloïse attendait un enfant, en conséquence Fulbert ordonna la castration d'Abélard pour l'éloigner d'Héloïse. Le seul moyen des amants pour se communiquer était des lettres, Abélard dans un monastère (à Cluny) et Héloïse dans une église de religieuses. C'est grâce à ses lettres que l'on connaît leur histoire. Ils décidèrent de dédier leurs vies au Christ avec l'espoir d'être unis au ciel. Pierre mourut 20 ans avant Héloïse, ses restes furent mis 500 ans après dans la même tombe, maintenant ils reposent ensemble au Cimetière du Père La chaise à Paris.
Cette histoire hors du commun ne s'arrête pas là : une légende, tenace à Cluny, prétend qu'Abélard ne pouvant se résigner à la perte de ses « bijoux de famille » avait conservés ceux cis et ne s'en séparait jamais même en voyage. A sa mort ces reliques restèrent à Cluny ou l'abbé les fit enterrer au pied d'un tilleul clôturant une allée du parc de l'abbaye.
Cet arbre vénérable a disparu depuis et été remplacé de nombreuses fois. Dans l'abbaye occupée aujourd'hui par une école d'ingénieurs on le connaît toujours sous le nom de tilleul d'Abélard Disparu aujourd'hui personne ne sait ou est passé ce « trésor d'Héloïse » la seule chose que l'on sait c'est qu'il n'est pas au Père Lachaise.

Historic theme:
Abélard was a philosopher and a poet from a noble family. Héloïse was a 15-year-old noble girl from the high Parisian aristocracy, a niece of Fulbert, a priest at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Abélard had only been asked by Fulbert to educate his niece, but Héloïse and Abélard ended up falling in love! This made Fulbert drive Abélard out of his house... But Abélard and Héloïse managed to get married in secret, and she soon became pregnant. When news of this came to his ears, Fulbert became so angry that he gave the order to have Abélard castrated, to separate him from Héloïse forever. Far from separating them, this made Héloïse and Abélard decide to offer their lives to Jesus Christ, with the hope of being reunited in heaven. Abélard went to the monastery of Cluny, and Héloïse to a convent, and the only means of communication was with letters, which is how we know about their story today. Abélard died 20 years before Héloïse, and their remains were put in the same tomb 500 years later. They now rest in peace together in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
This fascinating story does not stop there: there is a legend, still believed in Cluny, which says that Abélard was so upset about losing his 'manhood' that he kept them on him at all times, even when travelling. On his death, these relics remained in Cluny, and the abbot had them buried at the foot of a lime tree at the end of an alley of trees in the abbey grounds.
This grand tree died, but has been replaced several times. In the abbey, nowadays an engineering school,the tree is still known as the Abélard lime tree Nobody knows where 'Héloïse's treasure' is now; the only thing we do know is that it is not at Père Lachaise.

Pour le retour retournez vers la pierre, prendre la rue descendante (admirez la vue sur Cluny) puis dans le premier virage prendre la direction centre ville ; descendre la « petite rue des Ravattes » jusqu'à la rue principale.
To go back to your car, go back to the stone, then go down the street (admiring the view of Cluny), then at the first bend head towards the town centre; go down the « petite rue des Ravattes » to the main street.

Turn right onto the main street (against the traffic) and carry on until the end of the street. Turn left onto rue Porte de Paris As you go along the street, you can stop in front of the porch that is the entry to the Ecole des Arts et Métiers (engineering school) where you can catch a glimpse of the park of Cluny Abbey Go all the way to the Round Tower, then turn left to get back to the car park
