Blackwater Station

About the Area

Blackwater railway station is a railway station in Blackwater, a town on the borders of Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire in England. The station is managed by First Great Western, who provide services on the North Downs Line) from Reading to Guildford, Redhill and Gatwick Airport. Blackwater station has two platforms: platform 1 for services towards Gatwick Airport and platform 2 for services towards Reading. The station is unstaffed and has emergency telephones on both platforms. Both platforms have small sheltered seating areas. There is a white line running the length of both platforms as a safety precaution for passengers. Passengers are advised to stay on the outside of the white line until the approaching train has come to a complete stop. The Surrey Border & Ramp; Camberley Railway Just eastwards from Blackwater station was the site of the Camberley terminus of this short-lived 10 1/4 inch gauge railway that ran to Farnborough Green, near Frimley rail station, with one intermediate station at Cove Wood. Practically the whole railway, including its engines and stations, were reproduced to 1/6th of the size of a standard British railway. The line was opened by Graham Moffatt of 'Oh Mr Porter' fame, on 23rd July 1938, and ran primarily through that summer. Operations lasted until the outbreak of the Second World War, which spelt abrupt closure. Traces of the line today are difficult to spot, with much of the route disappearing with the coming of the M3 motorway and associated roads in the 1970s-1990s. Worse still, the route was never actually featured on any Ordnance Survey maps. Services First Great Western provide services between Reading and Gatwick Airport. Typically, these operate every 60 minutes. There are also addition trains between Reading and Shalford (near Guildford) or Redhill, giving a total service frequency of approximately 30 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytimes between Reading and Shalford.
