The split
cemetery
The two communities Hagensdorf and Luising in
the southern part of Burgenland share the cemetery. There is a
strict separation of where the deceased lived their lifes: People
from Hagensdorf on the left and from Luising the right, because the
municipal border of the two communities divides the cemetery in two
equal parts. On this cemetery (almost) everything exists in
double:
- two cemetery trees
- two water-taps and separate watering
cans
- two benches
TODAY only one cross is there, but this is
another story…
The cemetery is placed exactly in between the two communities (1.5
km distance to each) and both are out of eyespot from the cemetery
hill.
Speaking of the cemetery hill: Primarily the hill was probably a
tumulus. During middle ages the tumulus expanded to a castle with
chapel and moat. Then the chapel got the first parish church and
the cemetery arised around. Due to the uncomfortable distance to
the two communities, the church was later abandoned and each
community got its own church.
