Geocache Description:

Six burial mounds atop the bluff in Indian Mounds Park preserve a reminder of Minnesota's history for future generations. At least 16 burial mounds originally sat on the high bluff. Nineteen more were located further down the bluff above Carver's Cave (now at the end of Cherry Street). All of these and most of those in Indian Mounds Park were destroyed.

In the mid-1800s, several scientists-- Edward Duffield Neill in 1856, and later the Minnesota Historical Society under the leadership of Colonel DA Robertson excavated several of the mounds. Their findings determined that these mounds date back to over 2,000 years or the Hopewellian period of Minnesota prehistory.

About 12,000 years ago, with warmer temperatures, the Des Moines glacial lobe began to melt and retreat. The melt water trapped by large moraines pooled and formed the very large glacial lake, Lake Agassiz. Lake Agassiz covered much of northwestern Minnesota and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, western Ontario, and into Saskatchewan. Spillover from the lake occurred forming a great river called today by geologists, the River Warren. We see evidence today of the River Warren in the river valleys of Minnesota and the Mississippi Rivers.

At the outlook here at Indian Mounds Park, you see the remains of the River Warren as you gaze out at the so-called "Mighty Mississippi". What you are really standing on is the shoreline of the River Warren.

If you want to hear something very cool. When you are standing at the sign at GZ- step backwards into the circle on the ground. While facing the sign begin speaking. The circle makes your voice amplified. Way Cool Science!!!!

To log this earthcache, you must use the sign at the lookout to help you complete and email the following:

A. Take the elevation at the lookout. The elevation at the river
is 678 feet. Subtract the river's elevation from the outlooks
elevation. Then determine how much material was eroded each
year to get to where the Mississippi River banks are today.

B. Post a picture of you/group at the lookout. Or if you don’t have
a camera, with your email tell me the name of the foundation
and year printed on the sign.

Email your answers to the questions, to me, using the link in my profile only. If your answers are not recieved by me in an appropriate amount of time, your log will be deleted. Photos are accepted and appreciated as long as the answers to the questions are not revealed. You do not have to wait for confirmation from me before logging this cache as completed. Most of all……learn……and enjoy the view.
