A whale lived in here 1,600,000 years ago
Because the bone of the whale was excavated in complete form in this riverbank in August, 1961.
The name of the whale was named "Akishima whale"

昭和３６年８月、昭島市大神町の八高線鉄橋下流３０メートルの多摩川原で
くじらの化石を当時昭島市市立玉川小学校の田島政人教諭によって発見された。
国立科学博物館の鑑定の結果、昔この辺りがまだ海だったことがわかり
新生代第４紀更新世前期の約160万年前の地層から発見された化石とわかりました。
このくじらは体長約１５メートル、歯のないコクくじらに近いものでした
全骨格が発掘されたのは日本で始めてで『アキシマクジラ』と名付けられました。
今は世界的資料として、新宿の科学博物館分室に保存されています。
