Ryan Lake
The Victory neighborhood is home to North Minneapolis’ only lake – Ryan Lake. It borders the cities of Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis. Hidden away at 47th and Xerxes Avenue North, the Ryan Lake shoreline is a beautiful, open public space.
Canadian Pacific owns a rail line corridor in the Humboldt Industrial Park that runs along the northern shore of the lake. The City of Minneapolis owns land on the east side of the lake, which is maintained by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB). The rest of the shoreline along the west and east sides of the lake is rimmed by private residents. The first phase of the Ryan Lake shoreline restoration, was completed in September 2004. Over 60 neighborhood residents came together to plant over 6,000 native plants on an eroding shoreline.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conducted a fish survey on Ryan Lake in 2003. They reported that Ryan Lake had a great diversity of fish species and sizes and that it provides an excellent opportunity for sport fishing in the urban metro area. Fish species surveyed included above average numbers of northern pike, black crappie, yellow perch and black bullhead, bluegill sunfish (the most abundant species), largemouth bass, brown bullheads, bowfin, common carp, green sunfish and hybrid sunfish.
On street parking on Xerxes Avenue, there is no need to venture onto the railroad property and the cache is a small peanut butter jar. Minneapolis Park hours are 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
