Geocache Description:

This cache will test your knowledge and your ability to research, before being rewarded with a cache find in a small West Auckland park. The cache is a small sistema container with some camouflage attached. Please be careful handling the container, and hide it well when you leave.

How Well Do You Know PORTUGAL?


In order to find this cache, first you will need to work out the co-ordinates. Don't worry it's not hard - all you have to do is answer these 25 easy questions. All of the required answers are available on the internet.

Each question yields a numerical answer. Each of these values is assigned to a letter which is included in the calculations for the coordinates. To assist you in your quest, you should know that all 25 values add up to 837. You can also check your final result here.


A Last century there was a bloodless revolution in Portugal that is named after a flower. Name the flower in English. A = number of letters in the name.

U The 1998 World Expo in Lisbon celebrated the anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s discovery of a sea route to India. How many years was the anniversary? U = the number of years divided by 100.
V Immediately prior to the 1998 World Expo, a bridge named after Vasco da Gama was opened spanning the Rio Tejo at almost its widest point. What is the total length of the bridge in kms (rounded down by 0.2 to the nearest km)? V = the length of the bridge.
W Fernao de Magalhaes (Ferdinand Magellan) led the first successful circumnavigation of the world. In what year was this expedition completed? W = the year – 1500.
X Antonio Salazar led an authoritarian regime that lasted from 1933 until the revolution mentioned in question 'A'. In what year was the military-led coup that paved the way for Salazar’s dictatorship? X = the year – 1900.
Y In the 15th century Portugal and Spain signed a treaty, called the Treaty of Tordesillas (Tratado de Tordesilhas) that divided newly discovered lands outside of Europe into an exclusive duopoly between the two nations. Spain ratified the treaty on July 2nd and Portugal on September 5th. In the following century the Treaty of Saragossa or Treaty of Zaragoza divided the other side of the world. Z Portugal traces its national origin to June 24th, 1128 when Afonso Henriques defeated his mother, Countess Teresa, and her lover, Fernao Peres da Trava, at the Battle of Sao Mamede.
