Cerná kocka, bílý kocour (Crna macka, beli macor) je film z roku 1998 režiséra Emira Kusturicy, natocený v koprodukci Federativní Republiky Jugoslávie, Nemecka a Francie. Tento komediální snímek z dílny proslulého sarajevského tvurce, (který vystudoval režii na pražské FAMU), zlehcenou formou vykresluje život podvodnícku, mafiánu, cikánu i gadžu na balkánském venkove. Najdeme zde opet ztreštený humor prolínající se se stopami snového fantasticna, které tolik pripomíná magický realismus latinskoamerických spisovatelu. Snovost i ztreštenost jsou vyzdviženy špickovou kamerou Thierry Arbogasta a svetove známou hudbou Gorana Bregovice. V hlavních rolích oceníme výkony Bajrama Severdžana v roli Matka Destanova ci neprekonatelného Srdana Todorovice v roli Dadana Karambola. Uvidíme zde také slavného Miki Manojlovice, v roli sice vedlejší, avšak nikoli zastínené, kde špickove ztvárnil oddávajícího úredníka s abstinencním syndromem. Film byl v roce 1998 ocenen Stríbrným lvem za režii na Filmovém festivalu v Benátkách.
V roce 1995 Kusturica natocil divácky nárocný film Underground, který však nebyl publikem prijat, jak režisér ocekával. Tento neúspech na nej dolehl natolik, že dokonce uvažoval o konci své filmarské kariéry. O tri roky pozdeji se však rozhodl pokracovat a vrhl se na lehcí témata, címž zacala série filmu, které nazval „happy endy“. Prvním z techto filmu je práve Cerná kocka, bílý kocour.

Black cat, white cat (Crna macka, beli macor, 1998) is a Yugoslavian – German – French movie from the director Emir Kusturica. This comedy by the famous filmmaker from Sarajevo (who studied direction on the Academy of Arts in Prague) depicts in a light way the life of traffickers, mafiosos, gypsies and gadjos on the Balkan countryside. We will see Kusturica’s typical crazy humour penetrated by traces of oniric images that remind so much of the magical realism of latin american writers. The crazy humour and the oniric images are underdrawn by the excelent camera work of Thierry Arbogast and the worldwide famous music by Goran Bregovic. The lead roles are played by Bajram Severdžan representing Matko Destanov, or the overwhelming Srdan Todorovic playing Dadan Karambolo, among others. In this movie we will also see the famous Miki Manojlovic, who although in a second role, he is not in the shade of his colleague actors, as he astonishingly interprets a wedding clerk with an abstinence syndrome. In 1998 the film recieved the Silver Lion award on the Venice International Film Festival.
In the year of 1995 Kusturica filmed the ambitious movie Underground, which, unfortunately, was not accepted by the audience as the director would expect. This set-back affected him so much that he even considered quitting his filmmaking career. Three years later he fortunately decided to continue. He changed onto lighter issues starting a series of movies that he called the “happy ends”. Black cat, white cat is the first one of them.
