The Camry Cache
Some things weren't meant to be. Waldo marrying a princess, pigs
flying, and Camrys on the Baja 1000. Weeds19 tried to imitate the
latter and succeeded for a while, but fate finally caught up with
him. Not only did his vehicle high-center, his jack broke.
We got up early to go fetch the Camry. It was a fairly long
drive on good dirt roads, then it started to get rough. Then a
little rougher. Weeds had warned me that I wouldn't believe where
the Camry was, and he was right. When the 4-Runner's trailer hitch
started to drag in spots I started to wonder:
- How on earth did he get past that?
- How are we ever going to get the Camry back out of
here?
We finally arrived at the final resting spot for the Camry. It
didn't look that bad at first, but looks can be deceiving, and they
were - the entire front of the vehicle was high-centered.
It took a bit of work, but the low profile, wide footprint
hydraulic jack really helped. We got out and moved ... well ... a
whole 50 feet before we hit bottom again. We were out a bit quicker
this time. The final stick about a half mile later almost tore part
of the front off the car, but a little bit of jack and shovel work
and we were finally on better road.
The Payback
One would think it was a big pain to have to get up early in the
morning to go un-stick a Camry, especially on a day when I had
planned on going caching, but I saw opportunity. What a great way
to get even with Weeds for the Black Hole cache - I hid
The Camry Cache to forever mark this day in Geocaching
history. The cache overlooks the spot where the Camry's frame met
the rocks. Weeds did help me hide it, so at least he won't have to
feel obligated to return to this spot to log the cache.
How to Get to the Cache
You're on your own on how to get to the cache, but here's some
notes:
- Don't go in a Camry
- Don't go alone - it's a long walk out (just ask Weeds)!
- It's a long way in from the south, but the road was OK at the
time for high clearance 4x4's. Note that a Camry is not a high
clearance 4x4.
- The road in from the north was washed out.
- The terrain level assumes that you are driving to the cache. If
you hike in, it should be higher.
Final Thoughts
There are some beautiful desert canyons in the area, great
places for some future caches. |
