The cache is located on the hill side just behind the small
monument erected by the Graaff Reinet Afrikaans Cultural Society
which is dedicated to Gideo Scheepers, a Commandant executed by the
British on 18 January 1902.
Gideon Scheepers was born in the Transvaal, and at 16 joined the
Staats Artillerie. During the South African war he wrecked trains,
and burned farms of those that were unsympathetic to the Boer
cause. The British captured him, and tried him in a military court
where he was found guilty of more then 30 charges. He was executed
by a British firing squad at the age of 23.
The rocks and stainless steel needle have symbolic meaning. More
info on information board next to the monument.
The cache container is a large pill box with a log book, and small
pencil. (No sharpener).
Small note on cache maintenance: Relatives in the
town of Graaff Reinet will look after the cache for us.
