Geocache Description:

Once upon a time, in and around Charlotte, there were several drive-in theaters. In attempting to relate this brief history of outdoor entertainment with a cache this was the best location I could come up with. Can you fathom my logic here?

In Mecklenburg County there were the Thunderbird, Viking Twin, and South 29 drive-ins. And others, that someone might remind me of. Oh, let's not forget the Fox. If you know of any others that were in or around Charlotte note them in your log and I’ll add them to the list.

The last drive-in near Charlotte, The Belmont Drive-in closed in 2014.

Thanks for frograil for letting us know that as of April 2018 there remains open the Badin Road Drive-in in Albemarle:

Are you old enough to remember warm summer evenings with a Saturday night date in this the most romantic of venues? What about with the whole family for an evening out with the children romping on the playground set at the bottom of the screen? Do you remember the pickup trucks backed into the space with the viewers sitting comfortably in lawn or rocking chairs? How about those drive-ins that wanted to extend the season by giving a coupon for a gallon of gas so that you could keep the motor and heater running? It used to be the charge was by individual. Now, what drive-ins remain charge by the carload. So, how many memories do you have of entering the drive-in in the trunk or driving the car with a friend or friends in the trunk?

If you have a particular memory about a drive-in theater in the Charlotte area please add it to your log. This will entertain others who may have a similar memory, and enlighten those too young to appreciate pre DVD / Netflix days.

--> Thanks to beemerden for mentioning the West 16 Drive-In, the first place he ever sneaked into - and got caught.

You are in Park Road Shopping Center, an historical site in itself. The shopping center was the first open outdoor shopping center in Charlotte, and the first of its kind in the Southeast, when it opened in 1956. As strip malls (the current name for such centers) go this one is unusual in that it has maintained its charm while thriving with sixty stores.
