Geocache Description:

Rwanda Museum of Natural History - a little gem in the heart of Kigali.

Richard Kandt was born in Posen in 1867. He was a doctor, a soldier, an explorer, a scholar, a poet as well as an avid naturalist. He died in Nuremberg at the end of World War 1, in 1918.

He embarked on the first exploration journey to Rwanda in 1897, searching for the sources of the Nile. He later related his discoveries in the book "Caput Nilli. A sensitive journey to the sources of the River Nile".

Upon his return in 1907, Kandt was appointed first Resident Governor of Rwanda, establishing his residence in Kigali.

His research as a naturalist led him to explore the many natural wonders of Rwanda, such as the Nyungwe forest. He discovered new species and was the first to encourage the protection of this rich environment.

Great panoramic views over Kigali valley looking on Mt Kigali and the prison. Notice genocide prisoners in pink uniforms. There is an added bonus that opencaching.de have a cache in close proximity. See Wolfgang's cache too if you'd like.
