A lenda de S. Rafael
Diz a Bíblia (livro de Tobias) que Tobite, homem honesto e piedoso,
casado com Ana e pai do jovem Tobias, viveu o cativeiro de Ninive,
de onde se viu impedido de regressar devido à cegueira que o
atacou. Envolto na pobreza e sem saber como casar o seu filho fora
da tribo a que pertencia, mandou que este fosse a Média cobrar um
dinheiro que aí tinha deixado guardado. Contudo a viagem era longa
e perigosa, pelo que procurou alguém que lhe desse confiança, para
acompanhar o jovem Tobias naquela jornada. Sem que nenhum deles se
apercebesse, foi o próprio Arcanjo Rafael que acompanhou Tobias a
Média e lhe explicou como haveria de libertar Sara da maldição do
demónio e como proceder para a tomar como esposa, herdando toda a
riqueza de seu pai.
Vasco da Gama
É com esta lenda que S. Rafael se torna o padroeiro dos caminhantes
e de todos aqueles que procuram caminhos desconhecidos e perigosos.
É por esta razão que uma das naus de Vasco da Gama tem o nome do
arcanjo, invocando assim a sua protecção para uma longa jornada à
procura da Índia longínqua. A verdade é que o próprio almirante
manifestou uma especial devoção por S. Rafael, chegando até nós um
testemunho físico dessa veneração com a lendária imagem do arcanjo,
actualmente existente no Museu de Marinha, mas que permaneceu nesta
ermida durante cerca de dois séculos até às guerras liberais
e a revolução de 1834, altura em que a ermida foi devassada e
vandalizada.
A Ermida
Mandada erigir por D. Francisco da Gama como capela de devoção ao
arcanjo S. Rafael nas imediações da Vidigueira, a ermida é uma
construção de planta quadrada e arquitectura simples.
Devassada e vandalizada ao longo do tempo, a ermida já foi
restaurada duas vezes pela Câmara Municipal. Presentemente o
interior desta ermida encontra-se vazio.

Rafael
The Bible says (Book of Tobias) that Tobite, honest and pious man,
married to Ana and father of the young Tobias, lived the captivity
of Ninive, which was prevented from returning because of the his
blindness. Living in poverty and without knowing how his son marry
outside the tribe in which he belonged, he was ordered to charge an
average money that was saved in Média. But the journey was long and
dangerous, and it sought someone that his trust, to accompany the
young Tobias that day. Without none of them saw, Archangel Raphael
followed Tobias to Média so he can explained how to release Sara
devil curse and how to proceed to take as wife, inheriting all the
wealth of his father.
Vasco da
Gama
It is with this legend that S. Rafael becomes the patron saint of
walkers and all those who seek unknown and dangerous ways. This is
why one of Vasco da Gama ships has the name of this Archangel, thus
invoking its protection for a long journey in search of distant
India. The truth is that the admiral expressed a particular
devotion by S. Rafael, reaching a testimony to us that physical
veneration with the legendary image of the archangel, now in the
Museum of Marine, but it was in this chapel for about two centuries
until the liberal war and the revolution of 1834, when the chapel
was debased and vandalized.
The Chapel
Construction asked by D. Francisco da Gama as a chapel of devotion
to the archangel S. Rafael in the vicinity of Vidigueira, the
chapel is a building plan square and simple
architecture.
Debased and vandalized over time, the chapel has been restored
twice by the City Council. Currently the interior of the chapel is
now empty.
