Só para contrariar o ditado “Em Roma sê Romana”, o povo de Selmes
não teve pelos ajustes e decidiu anunciar a quem quer que seja:
esta é a nossa Ponte Romana.
Selmes é uma aldeia bem próxima de Beja em plena planície
alentejana junto à ribeira com o mesmo nome. Para atravessar a
ribeira de Selmes, existe uma velha ponte que forma um pitoresco
conjunto rústico. Construída de grossa alvenaria, com dois arcos
plenos e assimétricos tem, na face do montante, robustos e toscos
talha mares de pedra da região. O parapeito, com estribos,
protegido por um renovado baixo muro de protecção, dispõe-se em
vertentes inclinadas no sistema usual das pontes medievais
portuguesas. Esta ponte parece ser do século XVI.
Unlike the proverb "In Rome be Roman", the people of Selmes just
announce to anyone who ask: this is our Roman
bridge.
Selmes is a village closer to Beja in heart of Alentejo plains,
along the river with the same name. To cross the river of Selmes,
there is an old bridge that forms a picturesque rustic set. Built
of thick masonry, with two full bows and asymmetrical has, in the
face of the amount, robust water breakers of stone in the region.
The small protection wall with ties was renewed. It tilted in
strands in the usual medieval Portuguese system of bridges. This
bridge seems to be the sixteenth century.
