I grew up near this park, and have wanted to hide a cache here for a while. So, without much ado, here it is. This park was on the way to and from school for me, and was also the location of the summer recreation programs while I was growing up. Way back when someone would flood the old baseball diamond in the winter for a great ice skating rink -that was fun! I even took my dog Mickey (back in the '70s!) all the way to first place in 'Stunt Ring' in the annual dog show here in this park. It really hasn't changed that much.
I couldn't find much history on Sutton Park after a quick search, except this: In 1906 the Tillicum Club wanted to establish a city park and playground and told the city it would take responsibility for its development. Members solicited donations, not only of money, but also of labor and supplies. They created a bandstand, picnic tables, shade trees, and a playground. Named Sutton Park, it was maintained by the club for thirty years until the city took it over. This should be a quick cache, but do take some time and enjoy this little park while you are here -I sure did for years!
The Cheney School District set up its own school in 1887 with William J. Sutton as principal. Mr. Sutton, a charismatic speaker and teacher, went on to head the Normal School, and was one of its most ferocious advocates. Through consolidation with other school districts in the area, the Cheney public school district grew to be the largest geographic district in the state in 1960.
2015 was the inaugural year of Spokane Geocache Tour. This Spokane County tour sent geocachers on a trip through Spokane History, finding caches in areas of historical significance. Visiting urban and rural gems, historic farming communities, forts and geological marvels. The Spokane History Geocache Tour rewarded those who completed with a commemorative Geocoin featuring the native Spokane Salish language.
