With easy terrain and convenient parking this makes a great rest stop on a trip out the AA highway. This is a standard ammo box at a scenic and historic location.
Being a bit of history buff, I'm always keeping my eye out for interesting history lessons or historical locations. This one caught my eye on my way to a nearby motocross race. I stopped to take a look and take some pictures. Concluding that it would be a perfect place for a geocache, I checked to see if one was here... Well...
This cache is done like my mountain biking caches, that is in the spirit of quality not quantity. I worked hard on the custom log. Please try to keep it nice. I intend to keep them.
The Walcott Covered Bridge (1824) also known as White Covered Bridge is located in Bracken County and crosses Locust Creek. It originally carried KY 1159 over the creek, but is now no longer in use.
The bridge is of King and Queen Truss design and features hand-hewn joints and beams. It is made of yellow poplar and has a shingled roof. It was build of logs from West Virginia which were floated down the Ohio River. First constructed in 1824, the bridge was rebuilt in 1881 and remained intact until 1999 when constant flooding had virtually destroyed the structure. During reconstruction, engineers moved the bridge 400 feet east. If you watch the creek as you drive down the road to the site, you can see the foundation which was the original location for the bridge. The bridge was privately owned until 1953, when it was deeded to the Bracken Co. Historical Society, then to the Dept. of Parks.
During the Civil War, the bridge was used by Confederate General Basil Duke's men to cross to Brookesville after the Raid on Augusta in 1862.
Note that you do not need to cross any fence lines to get to this cache. You can stay entirely on public property. There are at least two ways to get close to this cache. Only one requires any bushwacking!
Be sure to watch for the nearby benchmark. It apparently is for the highway right of way and is not part of the USGS, so I don't think you can log it.
