Geocache Description:

One of the original bridges spanning the Tugela river.

One of the first ox-wagen crossings of the Tugela River was called Bonds Drift.

This old single lane steel bridge constructed during the 1930's spans the Tugela river at Bonds Drift and was part of the original main road linking what was then Natal with Zululand north of the Tugela. It is still in daily use.

During the floods of 1987 the large John Ross bridge carrying the N2 freeway and situated further downstream, was washed away yet this old bridge, that is anchored in bedrock, held firm. For nearly one year it was the sole connection for road traffic with northern KZN. During this difficult time north bound traffic was diverted up onto the railway bridge that is alongside while southbound traffic used the steel bridge.

While you search for the cache imagine, that day in 1987, with the Tugela in flood and the water level that just touched the underside of the steel spans.

This is a magnetic film container on the downstream side of the bridge - cant make it any easier. Park at the northern end of the bridge. Stuck inside the upright. There is no need to do anything dangerous to retrieve the cache.
