Geocache Description:

You can find the cache in the side of a navvy pit digged in the ground of a former war mass grave (1849).
Maybe You meet bees and/or gnats.
I am afraid, the former akác (black locust) forest is cleared and a thorny bush is next to the cache now. The easily passable (without scratch) cacher-path is starting from the West stone (concrete) bench as far as the cache.

Abda bridgehead (HU: GCHIDF) There are a lot of hystorical locality near the Abda old concrete bridge on the Rábca river. You can find the out of use old bridge hard close the new bridge of Budapest-Vienna No1 highway between Györ and Abda village. You can park your car here (N47° 41,302' E017° 33,618').This place was the most important crossing point of West „gyepü”. The „gyepü” was a hardly passable, wide defensive area in the early Middle Ages against the enemies. This west section of defensive zone based on Hanság swampy country that was situated between Fertö lake and Abda.
Year 1051
Decades of discordes for succession to the throne (see also GC10ZXX Deer Farm cache) followed death of king Saint Stephen (Szent István). Henry III. the German king thought to utilize the opportunity to occupy Hungary. The Hungarian army leaded by king Andrew’s (I. Endre) younger brother (the subsequent king Béla I.) annihilated Henry’s army in the big battle at the Abda bridgehead.
Year 1273
Ottokar the king of Bohemia invade Hungary with Bohemian-Austrian-Prussian united army and he achieved success at the beginning and occupied Nyitra, Pozsony, Nagyszombat and Moson towns. He wanted to attack Györ, but in the Abda bridgehead battle he was crushing defeated by king Stephen V. (V. István) and he was obliged to flee the country.
Year 1701
At the beginning of 1700s II. Rákóczi Ferenc was the leader of Hungarian independence campaigne against Austrian Habsburg-house. Rákóczi was captured and carried to Wiener Neustadt prison. You can find a munument here immortalizing a nice event showing a poor Abda fisherman’s fondness for convicted hero.
Year 1849
This is the year of big Hungarian war of independence against Habsburg-house. In the Abda battle the Hungarian battalion couldn’t defend the bridgehead and 306 died. You can find their monument in front of the forest chapel.
History of Abda village
The original place of the village was near the bridge but because of repeated floods they were forced to move westward 2 kms. It was happened in 1830. At the place of old church you can find the forest chapel now.
