Geocache Description:

The second in the my Cold War series. A short .2 mile walk with large 4" minus rocks along the trail, hence I say it's a 2. The cache container is not a 5gal bucket but is a 2gal rectangular bucket. Rehide it so it is not seen.

In the early 50's the United States made plans for a series of radar stations to detect enemy air attacks. Radar stations included those in Canada known as the infamous Dew Line and the lesser known Pine Tree Line. Stations were also placed throughout the United States, this one was part of the SAGE (Semi Automatic Ground Environment) computer directed air defense system. The 689th originally assigned to SAGE Portland Sector at Adair Air Force Station in Corvallis Oregon, then later assigned to McCord Air Force Base. These radar sites aided the Fighters F106 Delta Dart based at McCord and the F102 Delta Dagger at both McCord and Portland Air Base. When the threat from bombers decreased a new radar unit was installed and Detachment 2, 14th Missile Warning Squadron was assigned to Mt Hebo AFS to detect and track “Sea Launched Ballistic Missiles". All Air Force equipment has been removed and the site has been returned to the Forest Service, however one building remains that provided telecommunications. www.radomes.org/museum/
