Tallinn’s synagogue (also Beit Bella Synagogue) was privately funded and opened on the 16th of May, 2007. Its structure is modern and airy, mostly made of concrete and glass (the main architectes are Tõnis Kimmel and Kaur Stoor) and is the first synagogue to be opened in Estonia since WW II. The first two synagogues of Estonia were destroyed during the war.
Its opening was honoured by the presence of Estonia’s Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Israel’s chief rabbi Yona Metzger, Israeli deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres and Estonia’s President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
In his address, the Estonian President drew parallels between the histories of the Estonian and Jewish people.
"We both, Estonians and Jews, have lived among foreign people and under foreign power, but kept our language and culture in order to mould it into statehood," he said.
"In the final year of the Nazi occupation of Estonia (in 1944), a Soviet air raid set fire to the Jewish synagogue in Tallinn. The same air raid also set fire to the Estonia national theatre, a key landmark of Estonian culture."
TTC lead tourists (and local cachers also, of course) to some of nice places in Tallinn that didn't have a cache near it. The first cache of the new series of caches, TTC (Tallinn’s Tourist Caches) is hidden near a synagogue, but far enough not to draw too much of security guard's attention. Although I hid this cache late in the evening, there still was a lot of moving around and I had to wait for some time to put it on its place. So be careful – You may be seen by geomugglers!
IN ORDER TO FIND THE CACHE YOU DO NOT NEED TO ENTER THE FENCED AREA!
Hopefully you’ll enjoy the cache and the synagogue.
The TTC #2 is coming soon…
