On the White Rose Forest Walk at the tip o Butterley reservoir
The Colne Valley Tree Society, with support from the White Rose
Forest & in partnership with Yorkshire Water has created a
circular walk around Butterley reservoir. Agreements have been made
with tenant farmers to remove sheep to allow the process of natural
regeneration of the moorland fringe and ancient woodland around the
reservoir, bringing back the Wild Wood.
Parking is the same as for the Wessenden Hike (GC169PY)
The nearby lagoon has been created at the tip of the reservoir to
attract birdlife. The Tree Society have done a good job in creating
a very pleasant path through the nearby conifer plantation.
Work on Butterley was begun in 1891, and completed 1906, and work
on Blakeley Reservoir was begun in 1896, completed 1903, bywash
completed 1904. Butterley was geologically difficult; a tram
railway was specially built to bring the clay to bed into the
foundations.
