Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the base of the Pacific and Southern Tower in Holiday, FL. At 1538 ft., this antenna tower is one of the tallest structures on the west coast of Florida. For comparison, the tallest structure in Florida is a 1901 ft. high radio tower located in Bethlehem.

The tower was originally constructed in 1969 to hold the transmitter for the television station now known as WTSP, "Tampa Bays 10". In 1979, the tower's size was nearly doubled to it's current height. The location and towering height are the reason channel 10 still comes in so clear when your cable/satellite/fiber goes out during a hurricane. This is also the site of a new 110ft. Doppler radar tower operated by WTSP, that peers far out over the Gulf of Mexico for early hurricane warnings.

In the early 70's After the tower was erected, the Holiday Lake Estates subdivision slowly filled in the property around the tower. While most tower sites are secluded and inaccessible, this is one of the unique sites that give enthusiasts the opportunity to drive right up and have a look. Imagine climbing up and jumping off with a parachute..it's happened!

The original cache was muggled so many times, I turned this into a micro with nothing of value in it and changed the location. The tower is the feature here, not the difficulty of the hide. It's a typical Florida style that will allow you to P&G in the shortest amount of time possible. Best approach is from Solar Drive This site is accessible 24/7, but it is a residential area, so use some common sense after hours and turn down the sub-woofer, no slamming doors, etc. A camera is a good decoy if the neighbor muggles are out and about.

UPDATE 03/20/12: After 43 years of service, the tower is officially gone. It was dismantled over the past month, all that is left is the smaller Doppler antenna.
