século XX, principiou a correr mundo a euforia do novo desporto, o
futebol, Braga não podia furtar-se ao entusiasmo que depressa tomou

surgir aqui e além grupos destinados, foram então surgindo recintos
onde se praticava o futebol.
Assim vimos surgir campos improvisados nos peões e na rua do
Raio. Decorridos alguns anos, e porque se tornava necessário fundar
um clube que honrasse a cidade, surge o Sporting Clube de Braga,
que aproveita o campo na Quinta Mitra, propriedade do Estado que a
Sociedade de Melhoramentos de Braga tomou para arrendamento e onde
se fez um pequeno campo para a prática do futebol.
Mas os sucessos do clube logo obrigaram a pensar-se em
construir um campo novo, do clube e da cidade.
Lançada a ideia logo se principiou por interessar não só as
forças vivas da cidade, como o próprio Estado que através de Fundos
como o do Desemprego, desbloqueou as verbas necessárias para o
empreendimento. Para o projecto, que a principio era mais modesto
do que afinal veio a resultar, foi escolhido o arquitecto
Engenheiro Travassos Valdez, que concebeu um estádio que ombreasse
com o Estádio Nacional, no Jamor, e como este construído em pedra.
São estes os dois únicos estádios de Portugal em pedra.
Decorrido o ano de 1946, e querendo não só a Câmara de Braga
como o próprio Estado assinalar em Braga o 20º aniversário da
revolução do 28 de Maio, resolveram aproveitar a data para
inaugurar oficialmente o estádio, pois que já se tinha acordado em
que Braga iria ter um magnífico campo desportivo. Assim uma velha
escavadora, abriu um cabouco, e foi nele depositado a primeira
pedra.
Mas para a inauguração de facto ainda teve de se esperar 4
anos. Decorreu esse evento no dia 28 de Maio de 1950, Salazar e
Óscar Carmona, assistidos pelo Ministro da Marinha e das Obras
Públicas, deram como inaugurado o Estádio Municipal que então se
passou a denominar 28 de Maio e a partir de 1974, de 1º de Maio.
Para essa inauguração foram convidados os grupos desportivos da
região e organizou-se uma grande parada desportiva. Para
complemento realizaram-se dois jogos de futebol onde se disputaram
duas taças, uma entre o F.C. Porto e o Sporting Clube de Braga, que
empataram, e Benfica - Sporting Clube de Portugal, o qual foi
vencido pelo Benfica.Nesse dia um mar de gente, inundou logo pela
manhã a cidade e para sempre ficou o dia assinalado como um dos
maiores dias de Braga.
