Stovall UMC was established in the early 1870s when a group of
Methodists began meeting at Crutcher School, a one room log
structure. Thus, this Methodist society was known as Crutcher's and
was served by a circuit riding preacher of the West Point Circuit.
In February 1875, James and Lucy Crutcher McCarty deeded one acre
of land and Edwin and Matilda Stovall deeded an adjoining acre of
land to the building committee appointed by the West Point Circuit
of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South..for the use and benefit
of erecting a church house thereon. At some point in time, the
church became known as Stovall Chapel, traditionally said to have
been named in memory of Hezekiah O. Stovall (1805-1883)and/or in
honor of his son Edwin (1851-1945), who donated land more than once
for the church and cemetery. The original building served until
1909; a new building was built in 1910. In 1967 the present brick
sanctuary was built on the same site. The first worship service
held in this sanctuary was on Sunday, March 31, 1968. Through the
continuous striving and the foresight of church leaders and
pastors, Stovall UMC, after more than 125 years, is still open to
those of the community who choose to join its congregation in
worship. Please replace all cache sites as you found
them.
