The Basin Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

MainePublisher: All geocache placements must have a responsive owner. The cache owner must be able to respond to issues that come up and to submit an "owner maintenance" log to remove the "needs maintenance" icon.

In addition to the "needs maintenance" logs and DNF logs, Goundspeak also uses a Health Score algorithm. https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=38&pgid=713

In this case, Groundspeak has sent an email to the cache owner with no response. The cache owner did not respond to any of the cachers hoping to find the cache and did not respond to the reviewer note so the cache is now archived.

The cache location is now open for any Geocacher to place a new cache, including the original cache owner.

Geocache Description:

This is an ammo box in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest. It's a short walk from The Basin and you'll need to cross Cascade Brook to get there.

According to the White Mountain National Forest: known as "The Old Man's Foot" for generations before the Old Man's plunge, this unique rock formation and waterfall 30 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep was formed by the melting glacier swirling for thousands of years. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), early American writer [Walden] and naturalist, stood here on his first visit to the White Mountains and later wrote that "this pothole is perhaps the most remarkable curiosity of its kind in New England." Samuel Eastman in 1858 described it as "One of the most beautiful haunts of Nature, a luxurious and delicious bath fit for the ablutions of a goddess."
On your visit, I recommend that you hike up to Kinsman Falls for refreshment. Bring a book of Robert Frost poetry.

[Note: crossing the brook and searching for the cache may be difficult for small children; and for adults when the brook is running strong.]
