Geocache Description:

This cache is near the top of 9610 ft. Bosque Peak in the Manzano Mountain Wilderness. The hike is about 6 miles round trip on a somewhat overgrown trail that disappears near the end. Elevation gain: about 1600 ft.

Although close to Albuquerque, the more remote areas of the Manzano Mountain Wilderness are little used. I saw no one the day I placed this cache, even hiking an 11 mile loop up Trail Canyon, along the Crest Trail, and down Bosque Trail. Bosque Peak is a beautiful aspen-covered flat-topped mountain. I placed the cache in an open area on the south side where the views are awesome.

You can hike to Bosque Peak from half a dozen trailheads, but the closest is the Bosque Trail parking area at N34 46.293 W106 23.538. This is on the Torreon-Tajique Loop Road, which is gravel/dirt and can get rough, especially after rain or snow. A high clearance vehicle would be nice, but might not always be necessary if you take it slow.

If you are not familiar with the Manzanos, I recommend you stop at the ranger station in Tijeras and pick up a map of the Manzano Mountain Wilderness. The trails are overgrown with scrub oak and thorny locust bushes in places, so you better be tough if you wear shorts. Near the top, only the cows are maintaining trails, and they don't put up signs.

The cache is in a clear Tupperware-type container, and well hidden behind some rocks arranged to look natural. At least to start, this is a media cache, with a VHS tape, a music CD, and a paperback book, and a couple other little goodies.
