Located on the main isle of Sao Miguel, Azores. Cache elevation:
about 635 m.
It is possible to walk all around and above the beautiful crater
of Sete Cidades!
The cache location and the path to it provides you with
magnificent views all around and inside the crater, over a great
part of Sao Miguel Island and over the ocean. If you want to fully
enjoy this hunt, choose a clear day to find the cache.
There is not too much climbing and it is certainly not
difficult.
When you arrive to Ponta Delgada airport go to the Tourist
Office, and ask for Pedestrian trails brochures, or check this
page. This cache can be accessed via Pedestrian Trail ref.
"PR4SMI".
Check out the "
container and content" photo, where this brochure is visible.
The track is marked green. This photo is also a spoiler if you look
at it carefully ;)
The cache location can be reached either by foot, by mountain
bike, by motorcycle or by a 4x4, because there's a
dirt road to the cache. I went there with an old car, in dry
weather, without any trouble. If you care too much for your car,
choose another transportation or walk.
IF YOU GO BY CAR: do not start by the end of the trail. Either
start at the waypoint given, or go west from 'Sete Cidades', then
around 'Caldeira do Alferes' to meet the same walking trail north
of 'Caldeira do Alferes' (see blue arrow on the
map image below).
Cache initial Contents:
- logbook with a note about the old missing one.
- pencil
- binder
- yellow car
- screwdriver
- tabuada book (for children).
(THIS IS OPTIONAL: There are at least two more hiking trails
around Sete Cidades, that can be linked together to one great tour!
The length all together would be 21 km, and it is a great joy from
beginning to end.)

A princesa
voltar a ver o pastor.
As
Legend of the
Lagoons of the Seven Cities A long time ago, in the place where
today is the town of Sete Cidades (the Seven Cities), there was a
prosperous kingdom where lived a young princess very , beautiful
and kind. The princess adored the country life and frequently she
walked the fields, delighting herself with the murmuring of the
rivers or the green beauty of mounts and valleys. One day, the
princess of pretty blue eyes, during her stroll, came to a field
where a flock grazed. In the shade of a tree she came across with a
shepherd of green eyes. They spoke of the animals and other simple
but beautiful things, and they soon got passionate. In the
following days and weeks they had always met in the same place, to
the shade of the old tree and the love was growing of such form
that they had changed oaths of perpetual love. However, the notice
of the meeting between the princess and the shepherd arrived at the
knowledge of the king, whom desired to see the son married one of
the princes of the neighboring kingdoms and soon he forbade to come
back to see the shepherd.
The princess, knowing that the king would not turn back on his
word, accepted the decision, but asked for him to allow a final
meeting with the shepherd of the valley. The king acceded to the
order.
They met for the last time under the shade of the old tree and
spoke long of their love and separation. While they spoke, they
cried and in such a way they had cried that the tears of the blue
eyes of the princess had been falling in the soil and had formed a
blue lagoon. The fallen tears of the eyes of the shepherd were as
much and so felt that they had formed a tame green water lagoon, so
green as its eyes. They had been broken up, but the two lagoons
formed for tears, had been forever joined and are called Lagoons of
the Seven Cities. One is the Blue Lagoon, to another one it is the
Green Lagoon and in days of sun its colors are more intense and
reflect the shining look of the enamored princess and the
shepherd. |
