Edifiée au XIII ème siècle, probablement par l'Abbaye des Chazes, simple prieuré ou chapelle paroissiale, abritée par les falaises basaltiques, la Chapelle Sainte Marie des Chazes est un des fleurons de l'Art Roman Auvergnat.
Elle se compose d'une nef unique, de trois travées étroites, voûtée en berceau, prolongée par une abside semi-circulaire voûtée en cul de four.
Les peintures murales, visibles encore à la fin du XIX ème siècle, ont disparu suite à l'effondrement d'une partie de la façade et du clocher consécutifs à un orage le 15 juillet 1905. Cependant des copies exécutées auparavant à l'aquarelle permettent de connaître ces œuvres datées du XIV ème siècle. Sa vierge romane dite de Majesté, en bois, est dans la lignée des Vierges Noires, datée du XI ème siècle. Elle est encore vénérée par de nombreux fidèles qui viennent la prier lors du pèlerinage annuel.

ENGLISH :
Built at the XIII th century, probably by the Abbey of Chazes, simple priory or parochial vault, sheltered by basaltic cliffs, the Holy Vault Marie of Chazes is one of the florets of the Romanesque Auvergnat art.
She is composed of a single nave, of three narrow spans, arched in cradle, prolonged by a semicircular apse arched in bottom of furnace.
The murals, visible still at the end of the XIX th century, disappeared following collapse from part of the consecutive frontage and bell-tower with a storm on July 15, 1905. However copies carried out before with the watercolour make it possible to know these works dated from the XIV th century. Its Romance virgin known as of Majesty, out of wood, is in the line of the Black Virgins, dated from the XI th century. She is still venerated by the many faithful ones which come to request it at the time of the annual pilgrimage.
