How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

A get-together to learn a few skills from the experts among us!

The place: Arrow Electronics, Suite 11, 87 Canning Highway, Victoria Park. (click for Google Maps link)
(Enter via the sliding door near Bunnings, then it's on that level, around the corner)

The time: meet at 1400 (that's 2pm for the civilians) for about three hours or so.

If the door won't open, call PBL(aka Ian) on 9472 3855 and he'll come and let you in. Probably. 8-)}

The venue's just an empty room, so bring along a chair or something to sit on, something to eat and drink if you like, and anything else you might need!
There's a microwave, sandwich maker, kettle and fridge available, and KFC, Hungry Jack's and some other American fast 'food' place within easy walking distance if you missed lunch.

As well as a general catch up or introduction to your fellow geocachers, we'll also have a few presentations about various facets of geocaching practice and preparation.

I'll start some topics off on things that I know a bit about, and then we'll open up for questions and answers from anyone who wants to know something, and anyone who knows an answer!
(I'd welcome volunteers who'd like to start off a topic but, if presenting to a group's not your idea of fun, come along anyway and offer suggestions from the back!)

My current thoughts on topics (subject to change):

  • Online tools: Firefox scripts, Google Maps and Earth, etc.
  • Paperless caching: from Pocket Query to caches in your pocket.
  • Cunning Cache Containers: how to build, camouflage, and hide those muggle-resistant caches.
  • Getting your cache published: how to make theUMP's life easier and get your cache online faster.
  • Puzzles: some clues on how to make 'em and how to crack 'em.
  • Geocaching Australia: what's on the .com.au that's not on the .com?

If you have something you'd really like answered, or something that you'd like to bring up for discussion, put it in a note here and give people time to think about it.

There's a data projector available, and a laptop with Internet access you can use (no connection for your own laptop.) If you want to show off something on your GPSr or PDA, there's a camera that'll throw that up on the wall as well. Photos and such can be shown from CD or USB memory stick, but software will need to be on your own laptop.

We'll even have a couple of prizes for little quizzes or raffles or something.
There'll be a free raffle for a Palm IIIxe PDA to help someone who doesn't have one take the plunge into paperless caching. ClydE's also donated a licenced copy of GSAK for some lucky attendee.

It should be a fun and, hopefully, informative afternoon!
