Just a few years ago, geologically speaking, a glacier passed this way, and that's why the Midwest has the Great Lakes. Glacial erosion interacting with bedrock of varying resistance to erosion has accounted directly or indirectly for certain Lake Erie bedrock ridges. The ravine you are looking at is just one of many formations caused by Glacial Movement. Climatic changes caused winters to lengthen in the Northern part of the continent and snowfall to increase, but not melt in the short cool summers. Great masses of ice accumulated over a period of years in the Hudson Bay Region to form continental glaciers. There were four or five major glacial advances. During the last 2 million years the region was subjected to repeated episodes of glacial erosion and deposition associated with successive advances and retreats of Laurentide ice sheets. They permanently retired from the Great Lakes Region, returning to the area where it first began to grow some 65,000 years ago. To log this cache please email us the elevation you are standing at. Do Not Post Answers on Log. You must also post a Photo of yourselves or your gps. Located on Hwy.3, east of Port Alma, On. Parking Co-ords. 42*11.326N 082*13.363W
