THE GIFT IN THE
MONASTERY

Mosteiro de Sta. Maria de Alcobaça é o ex libris desta cidade. A
Abadia de Alcobaça é classificada como Património Mundial pela
UNESCO (1989), atendendo ao seu estado de conservação e à sua
arquitectura – Símbolo de Cister, sendo um dos mais importantes
mosteiros cistercienses europeus. O meu objectivo é mostrar o outro
lado menos explorado do Mosteiro, mas que tem também os seus
encantos. No exterior, com acesso pela porta do sul do transepto,
pode ver-se a Capela Barroca de Nossa Senhora do Desterro séc.
XVII. Notável é o Relicário e o Altar da Morte de São Bernardo dos
finais do séc. XVII, em terracota.

Ainda há bem pouco tempo numa das alas do Mosteiro funcionava um
asilo e noutra uma biblioteca pública que foi recentemente
recolocada e o espaço transformado num museu. O Mosteiro de
Alcobaça foi também oficialmente declarado uma das sete Maravilhas
de Portugal no evento recente que também declarou as sete

E: The Monastery of St.
Mary of Alcobaça is the ex-libris of this city. The Abbey of
Alcobaça has inclusively been classified Patrimony of the World by
UNESCO in 1989, attending its state of conservation and
architecture – Symbol of Cister, being one of the most important of
that Order’s monasteries. My purpose is to show the more unknown,
visited and seen side of the Monastery, which also has its
charms.
In
the exterior lies the Barroque Chapel of Our Lady of Exile (dating
from the 17th century) and is remarkable the Reliquary and the
Altar of the Death of St. Bernard, dating also from the 17th
century, crafted from a kind of ceramics called “terracotta”.
Unfortunately this small chapel is almost always closed to the
public, but it’s worth a visit.

Until very recently one of the wings of the
Monastery operated an asylum, and another a public library, which
has been since then relocated and the space transformed into a
museum. The Monastery of Alcobaça has also been officially declared
one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal at the recent event that also
declared the Seven Wonders of the modern age.

link) . On a personal note, I like this group for, besides its
musicality, the form it appreciates its fans by hosting an
exclusive concert every year in Alcobaça.

Esta cache é dedicada aos “The Gift” e ao lado menos conhecido do
Mosteiro de Alcobaça. Não sendo natural daqui, e não gostando
propriamente da cidade, é o meu agradecimento a 16 anos de
estadia.
A cahe é uma caixa normal envolta num saco de plástico preto.
Contém além do log book, lápis e afiador, algumas prendas para
troca. Contém também uma pequena lembrança par o FTF.
Para chegar à cache final não é necessário entrar no
Mosteiro.
E: This cache is dedicated to “The Gift” and the less known side of
the Monastery of Alcobaça. Not being a natural, and not enjoying
the city per se, it’s still my way to thank it for the 16 years of
residence.
The cache is a regular box wrapped in a black bag. It contains
besides the logbook, pencil and sharpener, and some gifts for
exchange. It also contains a souvenir for the FTF.
To access the final cache, one is not required to enter the
Monastery itself.
