Department of Natural Resources' state park and recreation officials announced today that Burt Lake State Park is hosting a free GPS (Global Positioning Systems) event on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
The event is sponsored by Garmin Industries, one of the industry leaders in GPS technology. Representatives from Garmin will be on hand to display various GPS units and to assist individuals with questions. A program will begin at 9 a.m. on GPS usage and the sport of geocaching. Following this program, there will be a scavenger hunt in the park utilizing GPS. Additional scavenger hunts are planned for 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Prizes from Garmin and other local business sponsors will be awarded to some of the participants in the scavenger hunts. Following the second scavenger hunt, participants will be provided with a list of GPS points in the local area that will lead them to interesting and little-known points of interest.
Garmin will also offer free software updates on certain Garmin GPS units brought in by the public.
All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.
