Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

First settled in 1788 by William Glazebrook, Ferguson's Cove was first known as Falkland after Lady Falkland, wife of Lucious Falkland, one of the Lieutenant Governors of Nova Scotia. Ferguson's Cove became home to the Connaught Battery, constructed between 1912-1917. It was named for the Duke of Connaught, Queen Victoria's 3rd son, who was Governor General of Canada from 1911-1916. The Battery was the only new Canadian-built fortification in Halifax (the other fortifications were all built before 1905 during the time the British were in charge of Halifax's defense system).

[Fortress Halifax: Portrait of a Garrison Town by Mark Parker]

Between WWI and WWII Connaught Battery was not used for military purposes. Instead, the grounds served as a recreational ball field for the locals. During WWII it became a training ground and residence for Canadian Army troops before they were sent overseas. Among other things, the Battery's three 4.7 inch quick-firing guns were at the ready for hostile aircraft.

To find the location of this cammoed cache you will need to do some research on the terminal velocity of paratroopers (skydivers). [Terminal velocity of a falling body occurs during free fall when a falling body experiences zero acceleration].

To find the northing take the decimal portion of the posted minutes and SUBTRACT estimated terminal velocity in km/h as reported by Tipler in his 1987 physics text. To find the westing take the decimal portion of the minutes and ADD the record free fall speed, done without any special equipment, in mph.

Cache is 150m from the parking area. It is NOT available between the hours of 10pm and 5am.
