Please note: The island is almost completely
private property. Please respect that on your visit. Do not cut
across lawns or people's house lots or fields on your visit; stay
on the roads, follow the shoreline and beaches, and usually there
are old hunting paths just inside the edge of the woods when the
shoreline turns into cliffs that meet the forest edge. These caches
are present on the condition of respect from visiting cachers.
Thankyou.
For 60 years the children on the island started their education
here, in Ironbound's little red one room schoolhouse.
The school opened in 1925 and educated students who went on to
become lawyers, teachers, chartered accountants, engineers, and
many other professions. Grades from primary to as high as 10 were
taught, with many grades present at the same time, but in 1985 the
final child graduated and the school closed. Education like this is
now basically a thing of the past.
