This cache requires the use of a 4x4 for heavy sand driving. Take the road through Walvis Bay, past the lagoon up to the salt works. To the right a road cross the salt pans and finally reaches the popular fishing spot, Paaltjies. Here a road to the right will take you to Pelican Point. You will have to engage 4x4 and deflate the wheels. Take care not to get stuck in the salt flats –they may look hard but often is wet. Stay on existing and often used tracks.
Pelican Point is a sand peninsula protecting the bay (Walvis Bay) from the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse, a cast iron construction of 34 meters, was constructed in 1931/32 by the South African government. The light has a luminous intensity of 1,300,000 candle power and has 3 flashes of light 3.6 seconds apart every 20 seconds. Since the cache was first listed a lodge was built onsite where the harbor control building was originally situated. When the lighthouse was originally built it was placed at the tip of the peninsula, but due to continuing sand deposits from the western side, the peninsula has grown to extend to its current distance from the lighthouse. Driving to the tip of the peninsula you will see various seal colonies but please do not go closer than 150 meters to them.
