Geocache Description:

This is a standard cache in a very cool area. There is an information sheet telling a little bit about the history of the cemetery in the cache. Please leave it in the cache. Thanks to Jerry Keys of Story County Conservation for providing what little history is known about this interesting area.

When I first began caching I found a cache in this area. It was really the cache that got me hooked on caching. I discovered an area that I had no idea existed. I had lived in Ames for 11 years at that point and it is likely that I never would have known about this area if not for the cache that was hidden there.

That cache has since been stolen. It was the Peterson Pit Pioneers Cache. The cache location will take you to a very small cemetery. Some of the first citizens of Ames are buried here. There are several very old headstones remaining.

Before I placed this cache I contacted the owner of the previous cache at this location to make sure she wasn't planning on placing another one here. She said that she wasn't and encouraged me to place this one.

This cache would be a very fun one to do at night, but be aware that the park hours are 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM.

Also, this is a hunting area. There may be hunters in the area from September through January. Wear brightly colored clothes or write "I am not a deer" on your forehead with a permanent marker.

You shouldn't need any hints to find the cache. It is hidden in a fairly obvious location. The terrain is fairly easy. I listed it at a 2 just because it's about a one mile round trip hike. Most of the hike will be on a well-maintained trail. Any time you come to a fork in the trail, stay to the left.

Permission was given by Story County Conservation to place this cache.

Pay attention to the parking coordinates. Make sure that you park in the parking lot to the east of the bridge. If you park in the parking area for the swimming beach at Peterson Pit you are going to have to swim part of the way to the cache!

There is Garlic Mustard south of the cache area and along the river. Garlic Mustard is an invasive plant. Story County Conservation is trying to control the spread of this stuff. If you walk through it you risk getting the seeds on your clothes and spreading it to other parts of the park. Here are a couple pictures of what it looks like to help you identify it. There is not any in the cemetery area or near the cache, but be aware that it exists south of the cache and along the river.
