Le
Serre de la croix d’argent.
Au IV éme siècle, Saint-Just, évéque de
Lyon, revenant d’une visite à une communauté de chrétiens installée à Rochepaule s’arrêté au pied de ce Serre. Il remarque alors,
sur le sommet dégarni du Serre, un arbre qui avait vaguement la forme d’une
croix. Un des prêtres qui l’accompagne se charge de tailler cet arbre pour
accentuer cette forme. Mais quelle n’est pas la stupéfaction de Saint-Just et
de ses acolytes de voir tout à coup l’arbre se transformer en une véritable
croix irradiant la contrée de ses rayons d’argent. Depuis c’est sous
l’appellation de « Serre de la croix d’argent » que l’on connaît ce
sommet.
The Serre
of the Silver Cross
In the 4th Century, Saint
Just, Bishop of Lyon, stopped at the foot of this Serre on his way back from a
visit to a Christian community in Rochepaule. On the bare summit of the Serre,
he noticed a tree that was vaguely in the shape of a cross. One of the priests accompanying him decided
to prune the tree to accentuate the cross shape.
Imagine the amazement of Saint Just and his acolytes when they saw the
tree transform itself into a real cross and irradiate the land with silver
beams. Ever since, this summit has been known as the ‘Serre of the Silver Cross’.
