Shoot the Moon Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Mike McGann: Wow! Things have changed in High Ridge.

The small footpath below the gazebo that runs along the river is no longer there. Heavy machinery has cut a huge swath from there all the way up to old access road near the cache site.

East of the first creek, few trees survived the wrath of the machinery. Shredded wood is everywhere. The really cool tree perched on a huge boulder, which was nestled away from the trail, now stands out alone from everything else. A small bypass trail still remains to circle around a fallen tree that is no longer there. The birch tree by the first creek crossing got chainsawed to allow the machinery to pass. Up the hill and through the open field area is now a straight shot as all the obstacles along the way have been removed. A "bridge" now exists at the other creek crossing made up of small tree trunks. Only one small fallen tree lies along this wide path which has one of the managed hunting area signs resting aside. It appears this path has been cleared to give easy access to the pipeline running through the area.

Anyway, when I got to the cache site, the cache was definitely missing. It looks like the larger fallen trees that provided a nice wedge to hold the cache have shifted. I searched the surrounding area to see if it had fallen down the hill, but I couldn't find any evidence of the cache. I was planning to drop in a replacement but now I'm going to archive it instead. What I liked about this cache location was that it provided me with a fun walk through the woods when I wanted to go check up on it. Without that, it isn't all that fun anymore.

Geocache Description:

A standard lock-n-lock container located in High Ridge Park in Howard County near Laurel, MD. Please read the instructions below before going.

Parking is found at the end of Superior Avenue off of Old Scaggsville Road. From the parking lot, take the paved path south to the gazebo. Follow the trail on the left to safely get down to the trail that runs along the river. From there you are on your own. Approaching this cache from any other way could take you through private property or very steep and dangerous terrain.

Inside the cache you will find a set of Copag plastic playing cards that are not for trade but feel free to use them while you are at the cache. Bring a friend along, break out the cards, shuffle, and play a quick game before hiking back to the parking lot. Or completely not impress your friend by showing them my not-so-ultimate card trick (ask me for details). This cache is my way of trying to promote the classic games of cards. Bring your own rulebook (and cribbage board if needed)! Using the logbook to keep score is highly recommended. Initial contents include six packs of unopened playing cards eligible for trade and a prize for the FTF.

High Ridge Park is a managed hunting area so make sure to be aware of open hunting days during deer season. The park is only open from dawn until dusk and the main gate is locked every night.

This is my first cache so any comments, suggestions or feedback is appreciated. 22,222 bonus points for the first finder to name the game this cache is named after. Bonus points are redeemable at any majikfleye cache.

While in the area, make sure to also visit A View to a Bridge placed by TMBFamily. It is a short walk from this cache and I'll bet that you don't know how tall the I-95 bridge really is. It is a sight worth seeing. Their cache description page also has more information about the park and additional waypoints with super-secret shortcut trails.

Happy caching!

Congratulations to DudleyGrunt on being the FTF and getting the bonus points!
