Monte S. João de Valinhas [Arouca] Traditional Geocache

O monte S. João de Valinhas deve o seu nome a uma pequena capela seiscentista implantada no topo e situa-se na freguesia de Santa Eulália, Arouca. A sua cota altimétrica máxima é de 448metros.

A sua localização, com um amplo domínio sobre o vale de Arouca, propiciou desde a antiguidade a fixação de comunidades humanas à semelhança do que aconteceu em outros castros e castelos do Norte do nosso país. A existência no monte de Valinhas de um povoado castrejo, a que sucedeu um castelo medieval, é testemunhado, pelos vestígios arqueológicos existentes e pelas alusões que lhes são feitas nos documentos medievais e por uma longa tradução popular, que ainda hoje designa como castelo o cabeço onde de facto o mesmo existiu. Existem estórias de tesouros (grades de ouro) e lendas de um longuíssimo túnel que ligaria Valinhas à torre tardo-medieval de Lourosa de Campo, na freguesia do Burgo, no lado sul do vale de Arouca.

As escavações arqueológicas aí levadas a cabo, ainda insuficientes, não deixam dúvidas quanto à existência de um Castro habitado desde o início do primeiro milénio a.C., bem como relativamente à existência de um castelo medieval.

O local terá sido deixado ao abandono no século XIII e da referida ocupação humana, as ainda escassas escavações têm posto a descoberto importante espólio arqueológico de diferentes períodos e ocupações.

Ou porque as invasões deixaram de ter lugar e não se justificava já a ocupação de locais estratégicos de defesa, mas também por acção da romanização que foi empurrando as populações para os vales férteis, existe no sopé do monte um lugar chamado Crasto, de origem muito antigo, muitas vezes referido em documentação medieval. Do espólio encontrado no Castro de Valinhas sobressaem, pela quantidade, escórias de ferro que fazem prever a existência de uma fundição, de milhares de fragmentos de cerâmica de várias épocas, e também de vidro. Pela raridade, sobressaem fragmentos de lâminas de facas, pontas de seta e moedas romanas, contas de colar e mós circulares. O achado arqueológico mais significativo é, no entanto, um alfinete de vestuário de prata dourada, datado dos séculos I a III. Estes como outros achados arqueológicos aguardam instalação no museu a que têm direito.

Mount S. John of Valinhas, located in S. Eulália, Arouca, has its name due to a small XVI century chapel implanted in its top. Its maximum altimetry is 448 meters. Its location, with an ample view over the valley of Arouca, favoured the setting of communities, since antiquity, as it happened in other “castros” ( old Roman castle) and castles in the North of Portugal.
The existence in the mount of Valinhas of a “castrejo ”town, which gave place to a medieval castle, is proved by archaeological vestiges, which are mentioned in medieval documents, and by a long popular tradition, that still today designates as castle, the top of the mount (“cabeço”) where it, in fact, existed. There are stories about treasures (gold gratings) and legends of a very long tunnel that would bind Valinhas to the medieval tower of Lourosa de Campos, in the area of the Burgo, in the southern side of the valley of Arouca. The archaeological excavations that have been made, are still insufficient, but they leave no doubts about the existence of a “Castro” inhabited since the beginning of the first millennium B.C., as well as to the existence of a medieval castle. The place was abandoned in XIII century. The archaeologists have discovered important archaeological materials of different periods and occupations. In the base of the mount there is a place of very old origin called “Castro” which is mentioned many times in medieval documentation. It is located there not only because the invasions had ended and the occupation of strategic places of defence was no longer justified, but also because of the Romanisation that pushed the populations to the fertile valleys. From the remains of archaeological vestige found in Valinhas, the iron slags stand out, indicating the existence of a blacksmith. There can also be found thousands of fragments of ceramics from different times, fragments of glass and of blades of knives, tips of arrow and Romans coins, necklaces and circular millstones. The most significant archaeological finding is, however, a golden silver clothes pin, dated from the first or third century. These, as other archaeological findings, are waiting to take their place in the future archaeological museum.
