A antiga
residência de Sebastião José de Carvalho e Mello é um solar típico
do século XVIII, da autoria do arquitecto húngaro Carlos
Mardel.
No espaço envolvente, destacam-se as estátuas, as cascatas, as
quintas e o jardim, que reflectem o modo de vida das classes
abastadas da época. No século XVIII, era comum a manutenção de
quintas como espaços de lazer e de cultivo.
A quinta do Marquês de Pombal seguia essa máxima, com uma
geometria rigorosa a dividir espaços de lazer, grandes jardins e
propriedades rurais. Era nos jardins em torno do palácio que se
realizavam os eventos culturais: teatro, bailado, música,
etc.
Denominada “Cascata dos Poetas”, por integrar os quatro bustos dos
Poetas Épicos: Tasso, Homero, Virgílio e
Camões, esculpidos em mármore, por Machado de Castro.
Integra ainda a figura de um "Deus-Rio", inspirado nos que existiam
nos Jardins Renascentistas do Belvedere, no Vaticano em Roma.

The former residence of Sebastião José de Carvalho and Mello is a
typical 18th-century manor house, created by the Hungarian
architect Carlos Mardel.
The surrounding space exhibits
statues, waterfalls, farms and the gardens, reflecting the style of
life of the well-to-do families of the age. Estates with both
leisure spaces and agricultural lands were common in the 18th
century.
The estate of the Marquis of
Pombal followed this principle, with a rigorous geometry to divide
recreation spaces, great gardens and rural properties. It was at
the gardens surrounding the palace that cultural events were held:
theatre, ballet, music,
etc.
It’s named "Waterfall of the
Poets", because integrates the four busts of the Epic Poets: Tasso,
Homero, Virgílio and Camões, carved in marble, by Machado de
Castro. It integrates still the figure of a “River-God”, inspired
in that existed at Renaissance Gardens of the Belvedere, in the
Vatican, Rome.
THE

The coordinates were obtained 2 meters away from the
cache.
It was the nearest local with acceptable satellites
reception.
