Battle Of The Kings - Pagan Cache Series Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

rich1ell: Time for this one to go. The intermediate stages often went missing and I’m no longer local enough to maintain.

I’ll drop by and collect any caches at the weekend.

Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

This is one of a set of caches devised and hidden to complement the
“Celebrate the Summer Solstice with the Laird” event.
They all have themes associated with various pagan rituals and beliefs that we have researched.
We are not pagans so reality and fiction may have become blended and all themes & their complementary locations are subject to “cachers licence”

Swords drawn and opponents bowed,
Time to fight men! One must die!
Who shall win the epic battle, you ask,
Yet fated, the victor is known.

One dressed in Holly, the other in Oak,
And green velvet gowns they have adorned.
Twice in the year, they shall meet and fight;
Twice in the year, one shall fall and one shall rise.

Not too long ago the Maypoles were raised,
Fair maidens danced and young masters gazed.
High in the sky shines the golden Sun,
And the Oak shall fall for darkness to reign.

The Feast of the Ancestors has been and gone,
Young rascals tricked, the Old Ones treated.
The land barren and dark, again the fight ensues;
Holly’s blood flows wide – return O Shining One!

Entwined in eternal battle are they fated,
To bring forth the seasons; plantation and harvest.
The Holly King and the Oak Lord, brothers in arms,
Each to die; each to reign high!

[A Seasonal Struggle by Alosèl Tirviniam]

The solar year is seen as being ruled over by two kings.
The Oak King rules the waxing year from midwinter solstice to summer solstice, the part of the year when the hours of daylight increase.
The Holly King rules the waning year from the summer solstice to winter solstice, when the hours of daylight decrease.
At each solstice they battle for the hand of the Goddess and the honour of ruling the land. The summer solstice begins with the Oak King in power, but this is relinquished to the Holly King at the close of the festival.
The idea of two gods, one summer/light and one of winter/dark occurs in many myth systems, Ra and Set/Zet, Marduk and Tiamat, Zeus and Typhon.

The cache is a multi-staged cache containing logbook and the usual array of trinkets.
The above co-ordinates will take you to the first part of the cache which is just under 2 miles there and back.
There is roadside parking on Church Lane just off Arley Lane, Gun Hill.
