Geocache Description:

Visit a fascinating little bit of history just north of Kendal and share the tale of what makes you 'scream'! This is an easy road-side cache.

So what is a 'Scream Point'?
"(This) is one of those places which in the days of my childhood used to be called "scream points." They were given this name because, when you came to them, you couldn't help calling-out "Oh!"
The earliest "scream point" that I can remember was on the road from Kendal to Staveley, where, as you come round a corner, you suddenly see the whole range of the high fells of the Lake District spread out in front of you. No visitor can go there on a fine day without exclaiming vociferously: "Oh, how lovely!"; in short, he "screams" when he reaches that "point." If he doesn't there must be something amiss with him."

'A Tour In Westmorland' Ch8 by Sir Clement Jones, 1948

A well known place
Just one chap's personal view, you may say, but what first got me interested was finding this 'scream point' named on the map. It was apparently so well known that it has actually made it onto the OS 1:25000 map - I saw 'scream point' written there and wondered what it was about and did some research.

This traditional scream point has effectively been moved - the Kendal by-pass now provides a higher and earlier view straight up Kentmere to High Street as you come down to Plumgarths roundabout (the one north of Kendal). The hills look just as good though!

What makes you 'scream'?
As well as visiting the cache, please share the tale of your personal 'scream point'. When you are visiting the Lakes, where do you get excited by the view; when do you know you're 'nearly there'? If you live here, any early memories; or which bit still gets the blood pounding? Please include a reminiscence in your log here. Any pictures of the view would also be welcome.

Finding the cache
The old road has been replaced by the upgraded A591, however, you can still stop at the original spot and enjoy the same view - on a clear day at least! It needs to be approached in the traditional way, ie. from the Kendal direction. At the end of a short dual-carriageway section is Ashes Lane, which goes left down to a caravan park. Take care slowing down for the turn - signal early! This stretch of the old road is now a one-way layby and you may have to dodge parked muggles.

The cache is NOT in the wall itself. Please ensure the lid is on properly and it is well hidden. It can be a busy spot at times. You can pull up right next to the cache. Feel free to let out a 'scream' when you do!
