In Alder Stream TWP, on Route 27, just before the bridge over the
Dead River to Chain of Ponds TWP. On a grassy road with a tree
across it.
Georgia was my friend, a mother, grandmother and a Passamaquoddy
tribal elder who spoke their language fluently. When she was older,
she built a camp at Alder Stream. She lived there many years,
practicing a subsistence lifestyle, lugging water, splitting
firewood. She was a hunter and a gatherer, a great teller of
stories, an excellent cook, a writer of beautiful letters. She
picked and sold fiddleheads in the spring, washing them in the Dead
River that runs close by this cache. In August, she picked and sold
blueberries. In November she went "tipping" and made lovely
double-sided Christmas wreaths to sell, filling her camp with the
smell of fir balsam. In the winter, with the wood stove crackling,
she wrote letters by candlelight, describing the beauty of the snow
softly falling in the dark and quiet woods. She died of cancer in
2006. This cache is a 50 cal ammo can, containing items that I have
referred to in the above description, and mostly Native
American-themed items, like a dream catcher, a toy canoe, a purse
with a Sagajawea coin, etc. There are also a few recipe cards for
Georgia's fry bread (TU MAH SIS), cream of fiddlehead soup, and
trail pancakes; a sweet grass braid, an ash bookmark, and
Livestrong bracelets. FTF may have a Crowesfeat30 geocoin, showing
raven and the sun, which you may keep, trade or activate and send
traveling; or a pair of sterling silver dreamcatcher earrings.
Please try to leave items that reflect the Native American heritage
or the woods of northern Maine. Whatever you leave or take, be
respectful. Georgia always wanted that. Woliwon! If coming from the
south, you may park beside the grassy road on your left or cross
the bridge and park on your right. Sarampus Falls picnic area is
just before you get there, with an outhouse, picnic tables, grills
and a place to fish. After you find the cache, follow the faint
trails around the tree across the road and enjoy the grassy patch
and the views of the Dead River. Nice place for a picnic, or to
fish or just relax. Life is short, don't be in a hurry.
