Some may wonder why there are *so many* sections of disconnected
sidewalk or randomly ending sidewalks in Durham. Well, here's your
answer...
The Durham Zoning Ordinance says that any new development must
include a sidewalk along the street rights-of-way. So if you are
building a new sub-division or major structure inside Durham city
limits, then you must include a sidewalk, even if it ends up at a
dead end. The most silly application of this ordinance I have seen
so far is at the end of a sidewalk at Hwy 55 and I-40.
DO NOT GO PAST THE FENCE!
The fence there marks the edge of the interstate right of way.
There is no reason to go past this fence, since the cache is just a
few feet off the edge of the sidewalk near the end.
Parking is easy on the weekends. Use common sense on weekdays.
Park nearby and take a short stroll on the sidewalk. A very short
stroll!
