Georg Simon Ohm was a German physicist born in Erlangen (N 49º35.208 E 011º00.498), Bavaria, on March 16, 1787. As a high school teacher, Ohm started his research with the recently invented electrochemical cell, invented by Italian Count Alessandro Volta. Using equipment of his own creation, Ohm determined that the current that flows through a wire is proportional to its cross-sectional area and inversely proportional to its length or Ohm's law. The importance of Ohm’s work is stressed by the fact that the unit for electrical resistance is named Ohm. One Ohm was earlier defined as the resistance of a mercury column 106,3 cm long and 1 mm2 in cross-section at 0 ºC.

Det betyder f.eks at strømmen fordobles hvis spændingen bliver dobbelt så stor (med den samme modstand). Eller at strømmen halveres hvis modstanden fordobles (med samme spænding)

Denne lovmæssighed har enorm betydning for design af elektriske kredsløb og vil være kendt af mange. Mindre kendt er det måske, at Ohm’s lov også kan bruges til beregning af koordinaterne til geocaching!

Y: Modstanden ved 20ºC (Ohm, afrundet, 3 dec. efter komma) af en 57,16 m lang kobbertråd med en diameter på 1,2 mm

We are living in a time where impressive technological advances within it, medico, space and other high-tech areas are constantly made. The basis for this is the important contributions from bright people one of them being Georg Simon Ohm (1787-1854), who established the relationship between the length, cross-section (substance) and the conductivity of a conductor and the relation between current, voltage and resistance (the reciprocal of conductivity). This relation is known as Ohm’s law:

Current (I) is equal to voltage (U) divided by resistance (R): I = U/R

This means that the current is doubled if the voltage is doubled (same resistance) or that the current becomes half if the resistance is doubled (same voltage)

It is commonly known that Ohm’s law has tremendous importance for the design of electrical and electronic circuits but maybe less known that Ohm’s law can be used to calculate the coordinated for geocaching!

The coordinates above lead to a convenient parking area. The coordinates for the cache are N 55° 51.X, E 012º 27.000+Y, where X and Y are to be calculated using Ohm’s law:

X: The resistance (Ohm’s, rounded off to 3 digits) in a bulb drawing 0.0142A current at 12V
Y: The resistance at 20ºC (Ohm’s, rounded off, 3 dec. after seperator) of a 57.16 m long copper wire with a diameter of 1.2 mm
