The ancestors of the people living in Korpo came from Sweden during the crusades in the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. The Swedish colonization of the archipelago has probably commenced around year 1200. The most concrete result of this fact is that the majority of the population in the area speak Swedish as their mother tongue.
At first the central rule was established by the church. The Korpo church, erected in the 14th and 15th centuries, is a monument of this.
I Korpo etablerade sig centralmakten först genom kyrkan och som ett synligt tecken på detta uppfördes under 1300 - 1400-talen Korpo vackra gråstenskyrka.
I århundarden låg Korpo sedan i det absoluta centrum av det av vattentransporter beroende svenska riket. Sjöfartens ekonomiska betydelse var störst under bondeseglationens glansperiod i slutet av 1800-talet. Under ryska tiden och självständigheten fick Korpo skärgård militärstrategisk betydelse.
