The parenthesis is the name of the period between 28th September 1944 and 26th January 1956, when the Porkkala area was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base. This meant that the people that leaved in this area in 1944 were forced to leave. They were given nine days to pack everything that they owned and move away. The area that was to be leased was 2/3 of Kirkkonummi, the southern parts of Siuntio, entire Degerby and parts of Inkoo.
It was decided that Porkkala was to be leased for fifty years. The Finnish state paid the farmers and house owners compensation for their lost property. The state demanded repayment of the compensation when the evacuees moved back in 1956.
This is my ninth cache in the series that I call Porkkala Parenthesis.
This cache is hidden at the place were the Russians built their sports stadium and amusement park. At the entrance stood an wooden arch which was torn down soon after that the evacuees returned. The trees on both sides of the walkway was planted during the parenthesis.
This field is still in use but now days the users are the inhabitants of Kirkkonummi. The field came to be called “Ryska plan” (venäläinen kenttä) by the returning evacuees. The real name of the field is “Central plan” in Swedish and “Keskuskenttä” in Finnish. This is a good example of how the parenthesis has affected the inhabitants and still does.
