Kivisalmi on saanut nimensä sieltä tehdyn siirtolohkare löydön ansiosta (1908), jonka perusteella pystyttiin määrittämään Outokummun kupariesiintymän paikka (1910). Paikalta löytyy muistokivi, jossa kartta Outokummun kaivoksen sijainnista ja siirtolohkareen kulkemasta matkasta. Muistokivi oli alun perin vastarannalla tanssilavan vieressä mutta siirrettiin nykyiselle paikalle heinäkuussa 2011.
Nykyisen sillan paikalla oli vielä 80-luvun alussa lossi. Sillan kävi vihkimässä käyttöön presidentti Mauno Koivisto.
Kivisalmi, direct translation as stone strait. Got it's name in 1908 due to the discovery of the shift boulder that was not similar to other rocks in the area. Boulder was rich of copper and it was carried from north during ice age. Outokumpu copper mine was discovered 1910 as a result of the discovery of the stone.
There's a memorial stone nearby where's map showing Outokumpu mine location and the distance traveled by the boulder.
