In case you arrive by car here you’ll find a parking lot : N 47° 31,9490' E 21° 36,3180' 116 m Csokonai was born in 1773 in Debrecen. He studied in the Református Kollégium (Calvinist College of Debrecen) for 12 years. He was popular as a student and also as a teacher. In 1796 he tried to find a patron in the parliament in Pozsony (Bratislava). His attempt to make a newspaper named Diétai Magyar Múzsa failed. Then he moved to Komárom. Here he met his love Júlia Vajda whom he called Lilla in his poems. In 1804 he wrote and performed a speech at the funeral of Mrs. Rédey, this was his last literary work. He got cold and suffered from pneumonia. He died on 28th January 1805. Around 1830 the city council wanted to take the initiative to build a Csokonai-memorial tomb, and in 1836 the tomb already stood in the cemetery of Hatvan street. The pyramid designed by Pál Beregszászi, art teacher of the college costed 2321 forints collected by students of the college (among others János Arany the famous poet) by the professors and other 300 people. The tomb became a literary pilgrim place. Sándor Petofi wrote in his diary on 14th May 1847 : „We arrived to Debrecen at sunset. We passed the cemetery where Csokonai rests. The mist of dawn floated as a veil on the iron memorial; I stared at it and I was musing whether a future traveller would muse by my tomb like this.” I think it is not useless to spend this 30 minutes walk in Debrecen.
